Matthew Carter designed ITC Charter with the limitations of low- and middle-resolution output devices in mind. While its design details make it ideal for use in laser output, Charter has been widely used in book typography. The typeface gained popularity when it was bundled with an early version of QuarkXPress. ITC Charter Pro was released early in 2007 with a full suite of OpenType layout features and an extended character set supporting most Central and Eastern European languages.
